Short answer: the best AI visibility agency for a local business is one that tracks a fixed list of real customer questions across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews every month, can show you a client it got named in those answers, and works on the signals AI assistants actually check: reviews, consistent listings, outside mentions and answer-first service pages. It should report the share of questions where you are named, never promise guaranteed placement, and understand how customers in your trade and your city ask for help.

Disclosure up front: I run Northview Agency, an AI visibility agency for local service businesses. So read this as a checklist you can hold any agency to, including mine. Most of the published lists of the best AI visibility agencies are written for software and consumer brands with national audiences. A clinic, a med spa or a plumbing company has a different problem: a customer in one city asks an assistant who to call, and the assistant names three to five businesses. The questions below are built for that problem.

What does an AI visibility agency actually do?

An AI visibility agency gets a business named inside the answers AI assistants give, and measures how often that happens. People also call it answer engine optimization (AEO), generative engine optimization (GEO) or LLM visibility. For a local business the work usually covers:

  • Tracking. A fixed list of the questions your customers really ask, run across the major assistants every month.
  • Answer-first pages. One clear page per service that answers the question in the first paragraph.
  • Schema and llms.txt. Structured data and a plain summary file so machines read your facts reliably.
  • Listings. Your name, address, phone, hours and services identical across Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp, Facebook and the directories for your industry.
  • Reviews. A steady flow of recent Google reviews, because assistants weigh recency.
  • Outside mentions. Getting named on the lists, directories, local publications and threads that assistants cite.

If an agency only talks about the first two, it is selling SEO with a new label.

Why does a local business need a different kind of agency?

For a national brand, AI visibility is mostly about category questions like best project management software. For a local business the questions carry a place and a need: who is the best med spa for lip filler in Tampa, or which plumber near me can come today. The assistant answers those by cross checking local signals: your Google Business Profile, your reviews, whether your listings agree, and whether local or industry sources mention you. An agency built for software brands may never touch any of that.

What seven questions should you ask before hiring one?

  1. Which exact questions will you track for my business? You want to see the list: 20 to 40 real customer questions for your city and services, fixed so month one and month six are comparable.
  2. Which assistants do you measure? At minimum ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Ask how often they run the questions and whether you get the raw answers.
  3. What will the monthly report show? The share of tracked questions where you are named, who is named instead, and which websites the assistants cite. Rankings alone are not an AI visibility report.
  4. Can you show me a client you got named? Ask for a real business, the question it was named for, and the before and after. An agency doing this work should be able to point at results.
  5. What do you do off my website? Listings cleanup, review generation and earning mentions on the sources assistants cite. This is where most of the movement comes from for local businesses.
  6. How do you connect visibility to calls? Being named is only worth something if the phone rings. Ask how they track calls, form fills or bookings alongside the visibility number.
  7. What happens if I leave? You should own your website, listings, review profiles and content, and keep all of it.

What are the red flags?

  • Guaranteed placement. No one controls what ChatGPT or Google says, and assistants do not sell placement. A guarantee means the agency is either overselling or defining success so loosely it means nothing.
  • No question list. If they cannot tell you which questions they will track, they cannot show you progress.
  • Only content. Publishing blog posts without fixing listings, reviews and outside mentions rarely moves a local business.
  • Fake reviews or fake Reddit posts. Platforms and assistants both detect and discount them, and they can get your business penalized.
  • Long contracts before any baseline. A good agency can show you where you stand in the first week.

How long should it take to see results?

Website changes can be picked up quickly. When we rebuilt one of our own pages, ChatGPT cited it about two hours later, though that was one answer out of 36 in that tracking run. Reviews, listings and outside mentions build over one to three months. A fair expectation is first citations within about 90 days and steady growth in your share of tracked questions after that. Treat any single fast result as a signal, not a trend.

How is AI visibility usually priced?

Most agencies charge a monthly retainer sized to the number of locations, services and markets, sometimes with a setup fee for the first audit and fixes. Ask what is included in the retainer, especially the off site work, and whether tracking and reporting are part of it or extra.

How does Northview approach it?

Since I said I would hold my own agency to this list: Northview tracks a fixed set of customer questions for each client across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and reports the share where the client is named, who is named instead and which sites are cited. The work covers answer-first pages, schema, listings, reviews and outside mentions. At Dr. Harrison’s Center of Functional Medicine in Denver, discovery calls went from 3 to 15 a month. We work month to month and do not guarantee placement.

You can see how Northview’s AI visibility service works, read what we changed on a page before ChatGPT cited it, or learn the metric we report in answer share. Running a med spa? There is a med spa version of this checklist.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI visibility agency for a local business?

The best one for you is the agency that can show you a fixed list of your customers’ questions, a monthly share of answers where you are named across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, a real client it got named, and a plan for reviews, listings and outside mentions. Use the seven questions above to compare agencies on those terms.

Is an AI visibility agency the same as an SEO agency?

No, though they overlap. SEO ranks your website in Google’s links and map pack. AI visibility gets your business named inside AI generated answers, which leans more on reviews, consistent listings and outside mentions. Many good agencies do both as one service.

Can an agency guarantee my business shows up in ChatGPT?

No. AI assistants decide their answers independently and do not sell placement. An honest agency guarantees the work and the reporting, not the outcome.

How do I check my AI visibility myself?

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google the questions your customers ask, such as who is the best option for your service in your city. Note whether you are named, who is named instead and which sites are cited. Repeat the same questions monthly.

Do home service companies need AI visibility as much as clinics?

Yes. Homeowners increasingly ask assistants who to call for a plumber, roofer or pool service, and the assistant names only a few businesses. The signals are the same: reviews, listings, clear service pages and mentions on the sites the assistant trusts.
